Trying to decide between 2015 platinum or new xlt

Hello! I've been lurking around here for awhile and this form has made me decide to go for an ecoboost over anything else. I really like the way a 2.7 drives in these- it reminds me of a small diesel engine but with better horsepower when needed, but the 3.5 moves right along with no fuss. I'm primarily looking to replace my daily driver and use this as an occasional tow vehicle for ~1500lbs of atv + trailer and maybe later a ~5000lbs RV.

My dealer ordered me a 2018 2.7 XLT with the 301 package, which I really like, but is fairly basic. It will arrive in a few weeks. However, he has a used truck on the lot that is really nice- its a 2015 Platinum with like 10k miles on it. The platinum of course has all the nice safety options, the leather, and the LED lights, and a 3.5. I think I could probably negotiate the used truck to around the price I've negotiated the xlt- $40k, but the used truck is only going to have probably a year of bumper to bumper warranty and obviously a few years less in powertrain warranty. I know there will be some differences in the drivetrain, primarily the 6sp in the 2015 vs 10 speed in 2018, and the addition of the extra injectors in the 2018 to control carbon build up on the intake valves. Is there anything else I should watch out for, on the 2015? do the safety features (line departure warning, adaptive cruise, etc) actually hold up reliably for years?

In short, I'd love the extra features of the platinum, but would never pay $60k+ for a new one, how dangerous a game am I playing getting a 2015? Are there any major issues that should make me stay away from the 2015? The truck is one of the canadian imports, so I'd be absolutely sure to check that first service was done on time, and it hasn't been in a wreck or anything before considering it. In your experience, do the gadgets keep working after 3-4 years, or am I getting them when they start to die out? any info is appreciated!

Edit: to add, My wife is ~100lbs and we are having to get bucket seats in either truck because she otherwise doesn't feel comfortable driving it, and I think the platinum having the 360 degree parking view will make her a lot more comfortable

Oh, tough choice.

I could argue either way.

It'd be a little easier if that brand new bumper to bumper 2018 was 302A.

I have a 2015 Lariat sport 502a, I have pretty much any option that platinum has, aside from different leather, and honestly I can't think of anything else. Most of the options I have in my truck are not used, you set things once, and likely hardly ever touch them again.

I don't think I would miss most of the options I have if I had to get used to a 302a.

Whatever you pay for the new one you will never recover. If you buy that platinum at a wholesale cost, you would likely be able to re-sell it and get that back again, granted you actually negotiate that deal down to a very very good price.

Financing might be cheaper on the new one because of the incentives given by ford credit on new trucks.

Warranty is cheap. Its sold at a very high gross profit.

Find someone who owns their own small car dealer of newer vehicles, and try to negotiate a deal with them on their warranty.
I can get a bumper to bumper 3rd party warranty on my truck for 100,000kms for $600. That warranty has a 100 dollar deductible for any claims made. It is also sold for $3000 normally, but I can get it at cost through a friend of mine. You might find it cheaper to do that, and go with the platinum.

I don't think I've helped you decide.

I would go with the newer engine and I would step up to a 302a with the sport appearance if this was my choice

I would take the platinum hands down. I find the lower modeled trucks a lot less comfortable to drive. I have a 2018 lariat 502a with the tech package and adaptive cruise - both awesome. I had a 2015 with the same setup and it worked just as well. You wouldn’t regret stepping back a few model years to go up from a base xlt to that platinum especially with that low of miles on it

Yeah the salesman was kinda perplexed when I asked for the 301 instead, but I don't much care about the size of the screen or the sync 3 system- TBH, I prefer the buttons rather than the touch screen. The truck I ordered is a pretty unique package, having the 2.7, 3.73 gears, tow package/brake controller, with sport appearance and fx4 and a moonroof. We didn't think it was worth it to move up to the lariat 502 which would have got us options we actually cared about like the lane departure, leather, adaptive cruise, and LED lights. I guess you could say the one we ordered is exactly what we needed and nothing more :)

Having bought quite a few brand new trucks in the past, I have somewhat regretted buying a lesser model than the one I wanted, thinking I only bought what I needed. Now you obviously decide your budget. The leather in the 502a isn't really anything to write home about anyways, you could get a 302a and get aftermarket leather installed and have a superior product. I almost went that route when I bought this one. Lane departure is ok, I occasionally use it on the hwy, its possible it might save you tired one day; I drive tired very often on the highways at night, and its probably been worth having it. The only options I don't have in my lariat are the adaptive cruise, which comes with the self parallel park, and the inflatable rear seatbelts. I don't think I miss not having those. The LED lights are definitely very nice on the highway, and the auto high beam works fairly well, though sometimes when I pass a semi truck, as I get up beside them, it will highbeam their mirror before I am all the way around them. It can be a bit finicky. Whichever way you decide, good luck to you!!!

I would take the adaptive cruise over any option on these trucks.. once you have it you will never want to give it up if you do a lot of highway driving - especially single lane.

I'm on my second eco of the first generation. My '13 had catastrophic engine failure, and i'm in the blown engine thread. My '15 may have started to show some timing chain symptoms. I would go with the generation 2 eco hands down

I think I should state that my '13 had been tuned for less than a year with a diablosport tuner. My 2015 remains absolutely stock.

Both only driven on the street, and not actually have seen the race track, but I do drive hard enough that you can consider that they have been raced, lots

Well I talked to the dealer today, and they can do $43,5xx including the 8 year 100k mile ford bumper to bumper warranty- which I think should address any concerns I had on reliability. Had a question on the tax come up as we're buying out of state and trying to register in New Mexico, but if we can get that sorted and get a good rate, I think we will go with the platinum.

I myself felt that it drove nice, but in the dark on the highway I'm not sure I could feel the difference between this one and the sport xlt. The safety features were kinda passive, leather seemed ok, all in all it drove like a new truck. It also didn't have any rattle when starting cold. I was settled on NOT getting it, since it didn't feel different enough to me to warrant the price premium, but my wife really liked driving it and we turned around and went back to the dealer lol. We didn't take it home tonight as we couldn't determine the interest rate and I think they were calculating the tax incorrectly for New Mexico, but will see tomorrow! It turns out they also have almost the same truck in the 5.0L, but with 27k miles instead of 11k. I know this is an ecoboost forum, and I do like the ecoboost, but anyone think the 5.0 might be a safer choice?

make sure you know what kind of financing you quality for, dealerships like to add a 1/2 percent to take in as back end profit.

I dunno, I drove a 5.0L at work a couple of times, I thought it was gutless, and just a noise maker, I didn't like the power of it at all. It really made me love my ecoboost that much more

drove and 18 5.0... nope.... I own the 15, love it..... I know the new design for the engine and build up is there to address the issues, but seems the 15 and up have a pretty good record with good maintenance.

I didn't care for the 10 spd either, just my personal reference and the smaller motor is a good worth option....

But reading your initial post, sounds like you will be happier with the 15 and it suits your needs better..... Go in, sit down, dedicate a few hours and hammer the deal that makes you happy for the 15

I would go used Platinum hands down. I couldn’t find one so I ended up paying a ton for a truck that decreased $15k in value when I drove it off the lot...(not complaining, it awesome). I think if you went XLT you would wish you went with the more plush Platnium as a daily driver. Your bride will feel more comfortable driving it with all the cameras and safety features. I have had 10 or more diesels over the years ranging from 96 to 07 years and this is the first pickup I haven’t heard nagging about the ride, comfort and ease of use from the wife. She actually prefers to take it on trips over her 17 explorer platinum. I don’t think this would be the case if I had gone base XLT

On the 5.0 vs 3.5, I am a diesel guy. What I have always hated about gas trucks is you have to wring their neck to make power. I prefer low end grunt any day over high HP numbers. If it wasn’t for the 3.5 I would still have an oil burner parked out front. Just my 2cents!
