2012 Ford F150 Ecoboost problems

Hey everyone,

We purchased a 2012 Ford F150 Ecoboost about 16 months ago. We bought it used and thankfully bought the extended warranty. In June while we were driving down the highway pulling our trailer the truck began to misfire. We took it into the dealership and they were able to feel the misfires. They replaced the spark plugs and coil boots (at our cost because extended warranty doesn't cover that) and they gave us back the truck. It continued to misfire and run rough. We took the truck back into the dealership on another 5 occasions. They replaced the coils, camshaft sprocket and VCT phaser, hoses, timing belt/chains, gaskets, bolts, sensor and wire ASY, TBCM sensor and pig tail. Each time they gave it back to us it continued to misfire and run rough. After the 5th visit, they gave us back our truck and assured us it was fixed. Then half way to our family holiday destination the engine seized. This was the 6th time in and the truck required a full engine replacement. We got the truck back and hoped it was fixed. However, the truck again began to misfire about a month later. We took it in for the 8th time and they reset something based on a technical service bulletin because they aren't sure what else to do. The frustrating part is the misfires seem to happen very inconsistently and at times the dealerships aren't able to reproduce our concern. We just got it back and sure enough, it's still misfiring and running rough on occasion. We contacted Ford Canada as 9 visits with the problem persisting seems ridiculous. They said they only want to work with us if they can 'confirm' the problem and said they only stand behind their products on "New Vehicle Limited Warranties", but at what point do we just have a lemon for a truck?? We are planning to file a civil suit. Has anybody else every experienced anything else like this??

Pull the intercooler, clean it.

pull the battery cables and leave them off over night, in morning start truck, let idle for 10 mins, driving normally shifting through gears, once truck is at full operating temp, drive for 10mins normal.

Pulling and cleaning the intercooler will not fully solve this issue. Drill the weep hole and put another set of new spark plugs in gapped to .030. I would bet that this fixes it.

PM sent to who? I am pretty sure the used car laws in Canada won't apply in PA. There are some cases where the lemon type of laws apply to used vehicles, but they are pretty specific. In most cases that I have heard of, you bought a used car so you will end up dealing with the consequences. You could read this and find out if anything will help you out. Used-Car Lemon Laws -- Edmunds.com

Or, you could make the most of the situation and take the advice suggested above. Change your plugs (new SP534s at .030) and make sure your CAC isn't holding liquid that is being ingested.

Damn that's rough, sorry to hear that! I've heard warranties are pointless but I'm looking to buy a 2012 FX4 with 130k miles tomorrow and I'm thinking about getting a warranty, just not sure. If you're saying even the extended warranty didn't cover that? They worries me! I heard they will try to do anything not to pay up. I heard they have a 90% chance of you never needing that warranty.

Some folks REALLY need to get that off their chest. 🤣
But to be fair, we get plenty of new Ecoboost owners that make a similar statement about their previous Chevy or Ram or Toyota.

I've been pretty fortunate with better than 50 years of vehicles of various brands. So I imagine that the experiences that can make a fella join and declare to the world "I will NEVER AGAIN....." is just a statistical probability that I haven't drawn the straw yet.

If/when it happens, I'll remind myself how it comes across and the folly of it. 😉

I mean.... People complain about these engines. But other manufacturers aren't any better. pick your poison, get a Silverado and enjoy having the engine eat itself, ram has poopy everything, Toyota is just paying upfront for quality, Nissan is trash.. so to each their own.

I see it the other way. They all build hundreds of thousands of trucks. So statistically you should have a chance to get a truck that overall serves you well if you purposely buy the configuration with the best reputation.
But like you say, you are not guaranteed a trouble free truck regardless of brand. They all have nightmare stories that do NOT represent the brand overall.
I've been on this forum for years now, so I have heard every kind of Ecoboost nightmare there is. And I know enough about them to know the weaknesses. Still, I personally have basically had trouble free experience with them. Although I have yet to keep one as long as I have kept other trucks.

I agree with you. It should have been phrased "of the problems that truck owners complain about, xyz is the most common amongst brand 123". None of them are perfect, and most owners don't have issues
