Okay gents. Canceled my appointment with ford, I think we got’er figured out, the works not done yet but I have a new exhaust passenger cam from ford.
Check this out.

my tone ring slipped causing the truck to think the timing is out when it’s not

I’ll be changing the timing chain idler this time( it bugged me I didn’t do it last time, the vac pump and the cam. I’ll report back when I’m done with the work prob in a week or 2 but I would be surprised if this didn’t solve the timing issue.

Seen it on Iveco diesels. How is that tone ring attached?
It must just be pressed but I’m interested too … once I confirm everything’s running good and I have no use for the old one I’ll try removing it and let you guys know.

Thanks guys, I managed to dig up a few images from the web … all kinda sucked but I was starting to suspect mine might be off. I messaged a guy on Facebook who does chains and asked him if he happened to have a cam handy or an engine with the covers off. He didn’t but he knew that it was supposed to be aligned and said he has ran into it before. I guess it’s rare but does happen.

that was enough for me to gamble the restocking fee and order one up from ford.

Feels great to have something definitive. Hopefully all the dash messages go away too, if not I’ll still have those to deal with but I suspect it will run fine after this.

I will report back but things are looking good.

when the cam is out I’ll try and maybe get some better pictures of it and see if we can get any meaningful info from it like how it could have slipped.

Okay guys I have one more question before this thing is done….(hopefully)
I’m installing the new tensioner (I just didn’t notice this the first time I put this tensioner on) it’s the updated one so it doesn’t have that same ratchet. It just has that little circular clip.
Do we just pull the pin and send it ? Or do we shimmy that to the bottom to keep the plunger from retracting ?

She’s back together, running smooth, no check engine lights.

turns out the issue was the cam, interesting.

I do still get those various warnings for various systems, park aid, tpms, hill descent… stuff like that.

I know that’s unrelated so I’m going to probibly let this thread die unless any of you have any last ideas about that.

Thank you all for the support and knowledge. It was super helpful and honestly just nice to not feel alone in this lol.

So glad you kept us up to date on this. Truly a first for me.
Thank you ! Yeah really weird, I think what happens is if a motor has low oil pressure the vacuum gets crappy ( maybe from my low oil pressure ? ) the slot that drives the pump is attached to the ring and just pressed on the cam. I think it’s unlikely it would happen on the other cams. I changed the pump too

Oh one more thing. The old cam, I mentioned I would try and see if I could easily turn the ring on the shaft I haven’t tried getting crazy with it but I really can’t get it to turn…. So I have no idea. Really odd, happy that’s over! :) thanks again
