16s didn't have phaser issues

Your catch can is either installed wrong or of low quality.
Interesting opinions. if 16's have no issues what is the 1 year change that caused this?
And siting poor quality parts or workmanship does streach it a bit. TJBme offers a conclusive reasoning in my own view, driving habits and frequent service. KM

PS: Gotta show my "coot" credits. km

Saying 16s didn't have phaser issues doesn't mean none have issues. If you want to argue about it I'm sure you can find a few instances of phaser failure, but I'm sure if phasers were a common issue on 2016s it'd be all over the interweb.

I also think it's reasonable to say the catch can is more than likely installed improperly if it catches NOTHING. Hard for me to believe his pvc system is bone dry. No oil, no condensation, nothing? Hard to believe.

Yeah the catch can thing baffles me. No cel, runs and idles flawlessly, uses no oil or coolant... yet never anything in can. Only guess I got is that I mounted it high up on the firewall just under the hood lip and that with the hose length doesn't give crankcase moisture a chance to condensate in the can.

Needed time to find this video, shows the "flood start" and diagnosis in shop of cam phasers. KM

There's a cool old-school coot (I'm allowed to say that with respect because I'm an old coot too) that's a member here, but I haven't seen him post in quite a while.
He was putting some serious though into how to add a pre-oiler system on an Ecoboost.
I was as encouraging as I knew how to be. For selfish reasons admittedly, since I wanted for him to succeed so I could have it too. :)
Howdy Snake!

Yep, I'm still kicken. The pre-lube thread is still out there. Basically "too many fittings" comment (By Arkansas I think) was a concern that I took to heart. The installed system worked as designed, but with so many fittings (I had not discovered custom hoses at that point) it was always on my mind. When I found a drip from a small micro crack at the pump those fears returned. I suspect that the pump inlet hose was vibrating as a result of my failure to properly restrain.

When not run over 24 hours, I consistently use the Snake Start. Also don't use auto stop, 50% oil remaining oil changes, full synthetic oil, running the truck to full temperature 95% of the time, and have a FORD extended warranty. As a result, I felt that the risk of the fittings was not worth the additional benefit. Another concern was that there certainly was a potential for Ford to not honor my extended warranty.

That said, once I get beyond the extended warranty, I will reinstall it with custom hoses and more thought about hose restraints!

Well I have a Ford "Gold Certified" 2019 3.5 ecoboost that has a powertrain warranty, but after reading at least a THOUSAND posts of bad experiences with "repairing" noisy phasers (they actually take the body off? No wonder everybody has problems!), only to have MOST of the repaired phasers become noisy again, I am very hesitant to take it in for this. AND, how does my vehicle pass a stringent 172-point dealer inspection in order to be Ford-backed certified with this loud rattle? Ford Motor Company issued this Gold Warranty just before I purchased it, after this inspection. Does that mean Ford is saying "noisy cam phasers mean nothing, and here is an extra 5 year/100,000 mile warranty to prove it?"
My 19 is in the shop currently for phasers. They did not have to remove the body.

Great to hear from you!

And I hope you know that I was referring to you with the upmost respect! 😉

Honestly, and Ironically, the Gen1 3.5 seems to not suffer from faulty phasers, but rather that really really long chain accentuating the inevitable stretching of a timing chain.

So Ford redesigns the 3.5 Ecoboost and shortens the chain, which seems to have been a good remedy. However then the phasers were introduced as the new weak spot in the ensemble.

This is just my personal overall take on it generally speaking.
I wonder if the Gen 1 cam chains are as long as the old 427 cammers that I've seen. Never worked on one but it was an honor to see one. I believe Ford had both SOHC and DOHC. Too bad they didn't have synthetic oil back then...

The 427 Cammers were SOHC (that's where they got their nickname, pronounced SOCK) but no DOHC.

They did have a DOHC Indy engine, 255 CID.

They could be. But no chain in drag racing. Easy changing spark plugs. These engines were around 650 hp.

These engines were also supposed to have never been installed in a new factory vehicle, though some have claimed that two were sold by dealerships as factory installed. These were over-the-counter items that would set the buyer back between $2500 and $5000 over their limited production run. That much even back in the 60s. That was simply an unheard-of price.

Interesting you mention spark plugs. The very early version of the Cammer's heads had spark plugs placed on the bottom portion of the head. Somewhere early on Ford found out that these engines didn't care where the spark was initiated and changed the plug location, making it so you could change them easily while sitting between the fenders.

Oh. That’s right. Forgot that.

Hey all. Like title says, what happens if you just live with the noise? Ford says that's all it is anyway, annoying noise. Does anyone have proof or can share experience where ignoring it caused catastrophic damage (that can be 100% attributed to a noisy vct unit). Thanks!

This is what happens to mine got my truck at 120k miles (I’m sure it had the noise when I got the truck I just didn’t notice) exhaust cam blew on me at 156 if you decide to replace your phaser make sure you get the upgraded models and not the old models
