Slightly buzzed driving is drunk driving. 🍻
Slightly pregnant is pregnant. 🤱
Slightly tuned driving is tuned driving. 🎶

Well said. Now if a Ford Performance Tune (albeit usually weak as tunes go) becomes available and allows warranties to remain intact, that in my mind is slightly tuned.

The reason I'm thinkin' down this road is that on the Exploder forum, there seems to be a good number of people opting to go this route. It took Ford over 3 years to come out with a tune following the release of the ST. When they did, they advertised an increase of 30 HP at the wheels.

I have seen reports (several) of increases of up to 60 WHP on 93, using this tune. I have no idea if this is factual or which Dyno was used. 30 HP isn't much to cheer about when some Tuners are getting 100 HP and beyond for roughly the same kind of money. 60 HP on the other hand while maintaining a warranty is worth it to some owners.

Having said all that, who knows which vehicles Ford Performance deems worthy of one of their tunes.

My brother has the Ford Performance tune on his Ranger. He got it when they initially advertised it as +90 hp, I think its down to +45 hp now.
He swears by it and considers it $700 well spent (more now I think).

Hemi and LT/LS folks are spending thousands for a cam, headers and a tune to get +30 hp, so we are still very spoiled.

If you're cam swapping an LT/LS with headers and a tune and only got 30 hp, you messed up pretty bad.

A lot of the cammed LT 6.2s will run north of 500 whp NA, and it's not uncommon to see 450 whp from a cammed LS3 with supporting mods now.

I get what you're saying though, and I agree that performance per dollar, it's very hard to beat forced induction stuff.

What's the difference in risk to factory warranty between a "mild 91 tune" and an aggressive E30 tune?

And I assure you that I'm just not the guy to laugh AT you. Nor am I happy in the least that your 2.7 found its limit. I admit that I increased my respect for the 2.7 as a direct result of your truck. And that's saying something since I have long felt it's the best overall designed turbocharged motor Ford builds.

Well, a light tune from someone like Brett from BoostKing would be much much safer than an aggressive e30 tune

I have a 93 daily performance file that I have driven almost a straight year on. Perfect daily, makes about 420whp on 93 octane, and I still tow my boat (~7,500lbs) without switching a thing. Great road manners too.

I didn't even change tunes until I started doing my E30-E50 testing recently. I got you when you're ready!

Interesting. That is pretty impressive.

You need the 7015 pg-b. Plugs strait into to pcm to bypass the security. Not difficult. A little annoying during r&d. I have them on my website. Email me for more options.

You would be best to sell your old device to recoup some cash.

I thought SCT had a new X4 specifically for 21 and 22, but 23 took a little different route. I may be totally wrong. I did contact MPT about my old x4 since it was married to my old truck with a tire size change when it was totalled. They said it won't work, that you need a new one, and it would be 200 to get the old one unmarried.

Cheapest divorce I’ve ever heard of!
I think I paid $200 in parking lot fees at the courthouse for a one-day hearing once.

I think I fixed that. A 2nd "quote" command was stuck below your photo, causing confusion.
Double check it is as you wanted it to be, please.

The daily driver is key.
Or certainly an only driver is.

It's America and we are boys that like our toys.
Nobody has to defend their decision to pour rocket fuel down the intake to see how fast it will go. Not to me anyway.

But the stress in the back of your mind if the machine is your only ride? Kinda takes some of the fun out of it to me.

I don't think you are even close to being done with fun. You have it in your DNA. Lol

You're just in the adjustment phase.
Rightfully so.
Solve the current dilemma.
Take a break.
It'll all come back to you. It's an unstoppable force. You'll just be all the wiser and go about scratching the itch another way. Plan B.

Live long enough, it'll be plan j, k, l, m,... ...

Oh I agree. I will still play with the 3.5. Just not to the same level.

My own dive into the faster pool was much the same, but hit a different wall. After some seasons of drag racing 1971/72/73 my Z28 in street stock class I could afford some deeper modification. Heads, carb work, and a 4.88 gear to use the high RPM of the little 302. The car was very impressive, but life tossed a curve. Labor union strike right after Cathy became pregnant 1974 (we both worked at Nestle CO). By spring of 75 we were getting very thin money wise and I sold my Z28.
That resulted in a shift in interest to small inexpensive sport cars/sedans and slalom racing.

Whatever you get Matt, I'm sure you will have fun with it even if in a different way! KM

Yep plus I imagine now there's plenty of used Cars that you can take with some mods and hit in the 10s or 11s fairly easy

Matt - I lived vicariously through your build and mods and WOT’s and Dragy runs. It was fantastic to read your progress, see you try new things, see you proud of your results. It made me happy that you shared it all with us too.
I will likely never move past having a tune; I’m no longer at the stage to add turbos, manifolds, exhausts, intercoolers or anything else to push more out of any engine. Heck, I struggle to get WOT completed for feedback to my tuner! So it was through you that I got to experience all of that.

Thank you for sharing those chapters. But, as I said before, I doubt this is the last chapter of your book. I look forward to seeing how the storyline evolves. You threw a potential plot twister once before (I am still eager to attend a wedding) and I am certain no one can predict the direction this story will go.
I will be there to follow it if you’re still willing to share it!

#1,703 ·
Thanks brother. I appreciate your thoughtfulness. I’ll invite you to a wedding someday! And of course, there will be a new build! Come Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday next week I could have a new truck. I will update you guys, as I am excited to see this truck I ordered!

#1,705 ·
I will! As soon as I get a new truck! The white 2.7 beast has had a fun life! And it’s been an awesome build! But life is not over, just the life of its original engine. With the new engine it will go on to make some owner happy.

#1,706 ·
I enjoyed watching you push your 2.7, I wish you never found the limit. I’m excited to see your next build. I think it would have been a lot more interesting if you ran the truck closer to sea level.

Sad to see it blow. I’m proud of you, you pushed it hard and enjoyed every bit of it. Although it’s never fun to see your hard work and money blow up. I’ve had it happen on a few vehicles I’ve owned. The feeling never gets any better.

I can’t wait to see your next build even if it is a lot milder. You made me want to tune both my bike and my truck. You’ll find a new project to dive deep into.

Matt, something we discussed before but still curious about. Have you gotten a good look/inspection of the remnants of the engine? I'm not so much interested in the damage, but the conditions of the combustion chambers undamaged, the valves, particularly the intakes, that may be attributed to the ethanol blend you ran. KM

#1,711 ·
Guys this truck will be alive in a few months! I ordered a 2016 2.7 complete motor with the turbos on it for 5250$ core charge and shipping included. Motor has 80,000 miles on it. I hope it’s in decent condition. Obviously it was in a truck and running before, but I hope it isn’t trashed internally. It’s got a 3000 mile warranty or something so should be good for a little. I’ll make sure it’s all set up and good to go.

Getting the motor ready to be pulled. I was shocked to see what I saw underneath the valve cover. I’ll be doing a YouTube video on that shortly. Anyway, that’s the status on Snowflake currently.

Eeewwww!
At least it's not poisonous any more, used barrels of ethylene glycol in the chilled water lines where I worked. When you are older and get a colonoscopy it is part of the prep. KM
