No just took my time, it should have took 1 1/2 hrs. Had problem with brackets for lines, pics in instructions had them going toward front but should have been rearward

I take forever to do this kind of stuff. Like to go slow. It took me about the same amount of time it took you. I re-filled with RoyalPurple 75W140. I like the sight glass and the ability to change the oil easily. Diff covers sure are designed in a silly way.

Anyhow, she's on. Along with the Raptor trans mount, which was a b*tch.

Do you feel it was a good $300 investment? Other than the cool factor I can't get past the cost for zero performance increase.

 

more like $400 with oil. It's the first thing I bought that was more for look rather than functionality (75% looks 25%function, it does have sight glass) it's just reassurance with sight glass even thou I really haven't seen to many differential problems

great buy. I really love mine, it makes your truck stand out from rest and the sight glass gives you reassurance and make you feel better. Have over 5,0000 miles and no problem. Gong to drain and look at mag plugs latter on for sludge ect.! But going to put back same oil that I Drained back in

 

Just finished installing mine.

 

After 5,000 miles had a small seep with 1-2 drops on floor.. Think it was coming from drain plug so I went ahead and drained oil and got this off of mag plugs. Magnetized sludge I guess, it was on both. Anyway put drain plug back on with extra tape an will see what happens. Cleaned up everything and will keep an eye on it

 

For those of us towing, the manual is clear as mud or at least Mr B's fluid:

"If you are towing a trailer frequently in hot weather, hilly conditions,
at the gross combined weight rating (or any combination of these
factors), consider refilling your rear axle with synthetic gear lubricant
(if the axle is not already filled with it). See the Capacities and
Specifications chapter for the lubricant specification."

and

"Normal vehicle axle maintenance: Rear axles and power take-off units
with synthetic fluid and light-duty trucks equipped with Ford-design axles
are lubricated for life; do not check or change fluid unless a leak is
suspected, service is required or the assembly has been submerged in water.

During long periods of trailer towing with outside temperatures above 70°F
(21°C) and at wide-open throttle for long periods above 45 mph (72 km/h),
non-synthetic rear axle fluids should be changed every 3000 miles
(4800 kilometers) or three months, whichever comes first. This interval can

specification WSL-M2C192-A, part number F1TZ-19580-B or equivalent. Add

I wouldn't expect that stuff to look like that after 5K.

 

Should have seen it at 20,000 when I put new cover on. The bottom was full, at least 4 tbl spoons. Oil was sparkly both times, just put old oil back in this time, at $90 wasn't going to put new oil in lol

 

That is weird stuff. Never seen anything like that. What fluid did you fill up with?

I pulled my dipstick on MH after a few hundred miles and had a little bit of gunk on the magnetic end.

 

AMSOIL Severe Gear SAE 75W-140 (the cheap stuff....not!!!) lol

might want to check after thousand or two

Yeah, I am pretty sure your Amsoil fits the "or equivalent" category.

That grease crap is weird, not sure what it is. The whole reason I got a different cover and did the Amsoil, is I don't plan on changing that fluid for a very very long time now.

 

that sludge stuff is weird isn't it! But anyway the seep is coming from the input not happy .... I'm taking it in for oil change (engine) in a few weeks so I'll have them replace seal then, that probably means I'll be losing my good oil (Amsoil) in differential,,,,what a bummer $90 down the drain. Hope they don't say anything about cover, actually they should knock off 1 hr of labor because they don't have to take off cover to drain oil. I'll see how far that goes lol

 

Turned in truck yesterday so today I called to see what the status was and they said that the cover voided the warranty for differential, but said that it was leaking because it was overfull. So I'm getting it tommorow and drain some out and see what happens. So if I change out a radiator hose with a non factory hose the engine won't be under warranty?? Just asking. They were nice about it and understood, but I'll see what happens when I go in person tommorow, I do A lot of business with them for the last 30+ years. Hopefully that's all it is. Will talk to AFE about sightglass level

 

You took in your truck to have them check the diff fluid? You have a lot of time on your hands!

What does AFE says for quarts to fill? I thought it had the sight glass? You can check over fill by parking on level ground and pulling factory fill plug on side of housing, fluid should be at bottom of hole.

If it is overfull though, I would expect it to be leaking from the vent tube, which I believe is on the driver side on these trucks. There is a tube running up directly on top of axle, hose should pull off.

I run 5 quarts in my mag cover, it checks out ok on the little dip stick....I will get under truck this weekend and check if anything leaking. It was not in the past.

 

^^^ I think that's nonsense. They'd have to show that the additional oil and lower diff temp (along with the magnets to scavenge metal shavings) rendered the diff worse off than the factory piece of crap. That's a pretty long bow to draw.

 

Will talk to service manager tommorow or judge (owner) his dad was owner and passed away two years ago so his mom took over and couldn't do it no more so his son resigned his judgeship to run dealership

edit: ford just called don't sound like they will cover it. its pretty much up to dealership. time to find another dealership but will wait to see what happens

 

I looked at mine, no leaks on cover or vent tube.

Did not crawl way under and pull dip stick again, My allergies or something went nuts this weekend and I just didn't feel like it.

From the input on the diff. cover? Why not take it off and teflon tape it, then reinstall? Mine doesn't leak at all. No signs of oil on the outside.

I kept my mouth shut and went home and pulled the fill plug and nothing came out. So I called the dealership back and asked them if the drained the oil and they said no. I asked them why doesn't oil come out when I pulled plug, he hesitates and said that lift was probably not level causing oil to come out, so other words what you told the ford rep was wrong so now what do I do? Have to go back and get PCV on Friday. Will talk about the issue then

When i installed my mag-h cover, they measure by markings on the dip stick. I never pulled the factory fill plug to check. I put 4 quarts in, it was at the bottom of the line, so i dump another quart and it was right at the top line.

I just checked afe website, they say "about 5 quarts" with oil in middle of sight glass.

The stock system is 5.9 pints = 3 quarts according the Amsoil specs. You should not have a problem with your current fill level.

I would check the vent tube, is it rubber? pull it off and see if these is clog. Overfill could cause the pinion seal to leak but if it was it should gush fluid out the vent tube first, not the seal.

My factory fill plug is on drivers side and when I pulled it I could put my little finger in and got oil

 

Ya i mis typed and corrected it already, it is driver. If the oil is below the fill plug hole, it is correct.

 

Calling ford rep tommorow to find out what dealership said about oil level.. Same as you I never checked factory plug after filling with new cover. Will check vent tube in am. Thanks
